Technical TSCM Blog: The New Shearwater Locator XTS 2500 NLJD is Here!
Since November 2010 I’ve had the new Shearwater LOCATOR 2.5 GHz NLJD in the field and have tested it on several TSCM sweeping exercises. I am proud to say I have the very first model from the first production run! I can truly say that the 2.5 GHz Shearwater Locator 2 watt CW NLJD is the nicest, most sensitive, ergonometric NLJD I have ever had the pleasure to use. The new Shearwater NLJD, at 2.5 GHz operating frequency, is more sensitive and effective than any 900 MHz NLJD, CW or Pulse, regardless of power. EVERY professional, competent sweep team needs to be sweeping at 2.5 GHz, and the Shearwater Locator is by far, the ‘best of the best’
The new NLJD incorporates the very latest, fastest search algorithms and the most modern Digital Signal Processing – DSP hardware and software for the detection, location and analysis of concealed passive or active electronic listening devices, cell phones, SIM cards and electronic components.
Small, lightweight, robust and designed for the harshest of environments, the LOCATOR easily finds technical surveillance devices as small as SIM cards, something no other 900 MHz NLJD can do. UPDATE
On a recent TSCM search exercise in a very complex target environment, we compared 900 MHz NLJDs to the new Shearwater 2.5 GHz LOCATOR. While the LOCATOR XTS antenna is smaller as compared to the 900 MHz NLJDs, and intuitively one might think that a smaller antenna takes a longer time to search a given target area, we discovered to our delight that the new and highly advanced transceiver technology in the LOCATOR XTS was very responsive, hence we could sweep at a faster rate, with greater pinpoint accuracy, than when using a 900 MHz NLJD. The LOCATOR 2.5 accuracy in a complex target environment totally pleased us, we were able to quickly pinpoint a nasty wireless keystroke logger hidden in a USB dongle connected on the back of a desktop computer. Repeating the exercise with a 900 MHz NLJD we found that the 900 MHz wavelength provided poorer discrimination (because it is long) and it picked up returned signals from the computer AND the Wireless keystroke logger – confusing the NLJD operator.
